GracePoint Ministry in Fairmont, WV – 2017

Working Together in Fairmont, WV

By: Craig Cope

From June 17 – 24, 2017 a multi-generational group of 17 GracePoint Evangelical Free servants joined forces with three other church work groups at Impact WV at Dayspring Camp in the mountains of Fairmont, West Virginia. Organized and led by Dr. Dave Keller, our team enjoyed a week of worship, learning more about each other, and serving at two homes in the area. The main job at Linda’s home was the removal of an in-ground fish pond and restoration of the area and indoor painting. At Wilma and Jim’s, an outside retaining wall and internal painting and window framing were the focus but at both places many extra odds and ends were accomplished. We also got to know our hosts as we chatted in breaks or while working. Having finished at both locations a day or two early our energetic group spent the rest of their time in W. Va. assisting at the mission camp staining picnic tables, mowing, cleaning the camp property, and other odds and ends.

A typical day started at about 7 am and work was at the assigned sites until late afternoon. Most evenings were spent worshipping God together with all on-site groups and getting to know each other better through games and chatting. On Wednesday both of our groups worked until noon then spent the afternoon together, enjoying the views and refreshing waters at a local state park, followed by a meal at an Italian restaurant. Only two trips to the local ice cream hang-out were scheduled (unfortunately both were when Pastor Bob – who came for a couple of days to help out – was not there to go along…it was suggested this was so he stays longer next time!) On Friday the evening meal and worship was attended by the various host families who offered thanks and appreciation to their work groups as well as saying goodbyes to new friends.

It was exciting to see young and “older” working together and laughing together while bringing joy to our host families. The old cliché of the participant getting more from a mission activity than they gave was seemingly felt by all who gave their time and effort for a blessed week. To find out if you’d enjoy participating on a future trip ask any of the participants of this year’s trip to Fairmont – you’ll be pleasantly encouraged at the heartfelt response!
